Your ability to earn an income is your biggest financial asset, often far more valuable than your home. The right personal protection makes sure that if illness, injury or the unexpected gets in the way, you and your family can carry on. Below are the main types of cover, and Tracy will help you find the right mix for your circumstances.
Income Protection replaces your net income if you're unable to work because of accident or illness. If you were suddenly unable to work, how long would your employer keep paying you, and how much? If you're self-employed, how long would your savings last? Income Protection gives you a reliable safety net so your essential costs are still covered when life takes an unexpected turn.
Life Cover pays a tax-free lump sum if you pass away during the term of the policy. It's commonly used to pay off a mortgage or other debts, cover funeral costs, or help your loved ones keep their standard of living. There are two popular types. With Decreasing Life Cover the payout reduces over time, usually in line with a repayment mortgage. With Level Life Cover the payout stays the same throughout the term, usually costing a little more but paying out more should the worst happen.
Family Income Benefit is a type of life cover that pays a regular monthly tax-free income rather than a lump sum if you pass away during the term. Designed to replace a lost salary, it helps your family keep their standard of living. The regular income can give a surviving partner time to adjust, reduce their hours or change jobs, and help with ongoing costs such as childcare, household bills and future education.
Critical Illness Cover pays a tax-free lump sum on diagnosis of one of a number of specified serious illnesses listed in the policy, such as certain cancers, heart attack or stroke. A serious diagnosis can bring real financial strain. Macmillan has reported that people living with cancer face an average increase in monthly costs of up to £570. The lump sum can help with medical costs, household bills, childcare, travel to appointments or changes to your home, so you can focus on getting well.
Private Medical Insurance gives you fast access to diagnosis, treatment and specialist care, without the waiting times often experienced through the NHS. It's designed to help you get back to full health as quickly as possible, with more choice over where and when you're treated. Cover can include consultations, diagnostic tests, hospital treatment, surgery, mental health support and therapies, and depending on the plan you may be able to choose your preferred hospitals and specialists.
Many protection policies now include added-value benefits at no extra cost, such as 24/7 GP access, a second medical opinion, worldwide medical services, fracture cover and lifestyle discounts. These vary by insurer, and Tracy will explain what's included so you get the full value of your policy.

Protection can feel complicated. Here are the questions we're asked most, answered simply and honestly.
Income Protection replaces part of your income if illness or injury stops you working. It pays a monthly benefit for a set period or until you're well enough to return, helping you cover the mortgage, bills and everyday costs.
Life cover pays out if you die during the term. Critical illness cover pays a lump sum if you're diagnosed with a serious illness listed in the policy. They protect different risks, and many people choose both for fuller peace of mind.
When you're self-employed, your income usually stops the moment you stop working. Income Protection is often the most valuable cover, and many self-employed clients also add critical illness cover or private medical insurance for faster access to treatment.
It depends on your income, financial commitments, dependants and lifestyle. As a Chartered Financial Planner, Tracy will help you work out exactly what you need, with no jargon and no pressure.
